Some favorites“Nobody Keeps It Cool Like Giveon” (NYLON) My cover story with the on-the-rise R&B star as he strived for old-school success in the age of TikTok.
“Artists now have to double as a content creator, which is like, ‘Oh God.’ You know what I mean? Imagine Michael Jackson trying to become Michael Jackson, but he has to be on TikTok. It’s bittersweet.”
“Clueless Turns 25: An Oral History of Cher’s Iconic Closet” (NYLON) Cher Horowitz’s closet—catalogued, virtual, and revolving—is an inspiration, even decades later. I tracked down the crew behind the ‘90s fashion film, from the production designer and set decorator to the legendary Mona May and Amy Heckerling, to find out how it all came to life.
Heckerling: “[The art department] came up with the computer’s screensaver with the moving little hangers and leopard-print background. Once people had an idea of what we were all doing, everybody sort of went off and had fun with it. So I didn't say, ‘I want it to be leopard or pink or have clothes hangers.’ They said, ‘What do you think of this?’ And that was exactly right.”
“10 Fashion Facts from Euphoria Season 2, According to Its Costume Designer” (NYLON) I spoke with the extremely talented (and cool) Heidi Bivens about how she styled the cast of Euphoria, which garnered its own fanbase tracking every character’s outfit each week.
“Why Bootleg Gucci Is, To Some, More Authentic Than the Real Thing” (Fashionista) After seeing creative director Alessandro Michele’s Cruise 2017 runway show featuring bootleg-inspired Gucci logo sweatshirts, I couldn’t help but think about the knockoff versions I used to hunt for back in the early 2000s. I spoke with online sellers about the garment’s value, especially within the hip-hop community, and even got in touch with the famous Harlem-based tailor Dapper Dan to get his own historical insight about bootleg Gucci. A year after our conversation, Dap snagged a major partnership with the luxury fashion house.
“When Did Tattoo Studios Get So Chic?” (Fashionista) The experience of getting inked is now far from your traditional tattoo parlor setting. I highlighted the artists and founders who kept aesthetic top of mind—and took notes from fashion and retail—to create their own studio spaces.
“I’d like to think the success of the studio so far has been from the artists and all of the great guest artists we’ve had since we opened up. But I think those artists have wanted to guest here because this space is cool. They know they’re going to be in a mellow environment where it’s going to be a little more intimate between them and their clients.” — Max Lilien of The Sunroom
“Anna Sui Brought Back Her ‘00s and ‘90s Designs for SSENSE” (NYLON) It’s not often that you get the chance to speak with one of the marquee names of New York Fashion Week. Anna Sui is so thoughtful about her work and has always stayed true to her love of music, romance, and whimsy in her designs, which are all resonating so much with today’s younger generation.
“To me, I really feel that they’re getting the idea that it was much more real back then. My front rows were my friends or they were the boyfriends of the models, or I went to a concert and I would invite the rock star from the concert to come to the show. It was all very organic. It wasn’t a whole front row with paid people to wear the clothes and carry the bag.”
